Shah Faisal Masjid Islamabad is a large mosque located in the capital city of Islamabad, Pakistan. It was designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay and built between 1976 and 1986. The mosque covers an area of more than 8000 square meters and can accommodate up to 100,000 worshippers at once. The central prayer hall has a height of 79 feet and walls with a maximum height of 162 feet. The main structure is made up of four minarets that are 240 feet tall each, making it one of the tallest mosques in the world.
The striking design features 8 distinctive sides which are said to represent the different Islamic schools of thought and signifies peace, unity, and solidarity among Muslims worldwide. The unique architecture also includes four 40 m high octagonal shaped minarets with 56-meter-high white marble domes with mosaic patterned edges. Inside the mosque, there are 98 rectangular shaped marble pillars that support the traditional archways along with intricate tile work that adorns its interior walls.
In addition to being an iconic destination for visitors from all around the globe, Shah Faisal Mosque is also known for its holy atmosphere; thousands come here to participate in prayers five times every day as well as during Friday congregations every week.
