Rawal Dam Spillway, located in Islamabad, Pakistan, is one of the most significant pieces of infrastructure in the region. Built by the British during their colonial rule in India, it serves as an important source of irrigation and flood control for the city of Islamabad. This unique spillway was constructed to provide navigational benefits for boats navigating upstream from Rawal Lake. It also helps to maintain a healthy water balance between the various tributaries and lakes throughout the area.
The spillway consists of an earth-filled reinforced concrete structure with a sluicing wall that can handle up to 45 cubic meters per second discharge capacity. The spillway is 635 meters long and has 34 bays spread over 20 piers. Its length allows it to span across multiple terrain levels while still providing easy navigation through its multiple outlets. The top width of the spillway is 28 meters, while its bottom width is 10 meters wide. In addition, its channels are lined with masonry blocks and are submerged 8-11 meters below surface level.
Rawal Dam Spillway's main purpose is to regulate water flow from Rawal Lake during high flooding seasons by releasing excess water downstream gradually before finally passing into Simly Reservoir. The surrounding wetlands also benefit from this spillway as it helps maintain a constant water level and ensures that aquatic life remains abundant in the area without risking inundation due to sudden water overflow. Additionally, its presence helps alleviate soil erosion caused by unchecked water runoff from nearby hillsides and mountainsides which can cause major problems if left unchecked or unmaintained.
